With sacred ritual and festive joy, the 2021-2022 Ignatian Year came to a close on Sunday, July 31 at the Pontifical Biblical Institute. The year commemorated the 500th anniversary of the conversion of St. Ignatius of Loyola.

Among the those considered in the International Book Prize competition of the Shoah memorial in Israel, Yad VaShem, was Jesuit professor of philosophy James Bernauer SJ of Boston College. The press release from Yad Vashem said, “The panel of judges found special interest in the book by Prof. James Bernauer, S.J., Jesuit Kaddish: Jesuits, Jews, and Holocaust Remembrance (University of Notre Dame Press, 2020).”

Dr. Mellie Brodeth brought her Teresian Association spiritual life and work ethic to the Pontifical Biblical Institute last March. The Teresian Association is an international lay ecclesial community, founded by Saint Pedro Poveda in 1911, in Covadonga, Asturias (Spain). St. Pedro Poveda, a martyr during the Spanish Civil War, wanted the laity to bring faith, human development, and social development to the world each day.

Jerusalem lay at the heart of Ignatius’ life journey. He visited the Holy Land and Jerusalem as a pilgrim in 1523, and it remained the destination for him and for the first companions at their vows at Montmartre in 1534, had Divine Providence not led them otherwise.
The encounter with Christ through the Gospels — asking for “interior knowledge of the Lord, who for me has become man, that I may love and follow him more” [Spir. Ex. 104] — lie at the very heart of the Exercises. As for Ignatius, the encounter with Christ takes places in history, in a particular land. A God who encounters humanity in history, through the Incarnation.
Walking and praying the Holy Land is a powerful reminder of this truth.

About twenty-five-thousand individuals constitute this group of courageous men and women, who, risked their lives to save Jews from the hands of the Nazis during the Shoah.

On Friday 30 July, Scholastic Mark Logtenberg and Frs. Terry Kersch (a Basilian father), George Schultze, and Ryszard Wtorek visited the archaeological excavation at Tel Azekah, at the invitation of Fr Josef Briffa, a member of our community, who is a staff member of the Lautenschläger Azekah Expedition. Josef introduced the group to Prof. Oded Lipschits of Tel Aviv University, the Director of the Excavation. Oded encouraged them to visit the area which Josef supervises and then join the other family, friends, and sponsors participating in the “digs” annual visitor’s day.

Five hundred years ago, on May 20, 1521, Ignatius of Loyola was defending the Spanish city of Pamplona against French troops. A canon ball shattered his legs… and his dreams of a life of worldly success. This led him through a conversion that led him to found the Society of Jesus.
